I spent an hour on the phone with Comcast tech support and then 4 hours on line with Microsoft Tech support trying to get this problem fixed. You can set them manually, but it doesn't seem to work. Furthermore, it shows no Default Gateway address. From what I am told, that's what it will show when it can't get to the DHCP. It shows as Autoconfiguration IPv4 address and has a value of 169.254. Furthermore, when I do an IPCONFIG at the command prompt, I find that my IPv4 address is incorrect. I have scoured the internet and tried a slew of possible solutions that I have found there and none have worked. I've tried everything that I know to fix the problem and it always ends up right back in the same place. Everytime I boot the laptop, it tries to identify the network, but always ends up with "unidentified network and public network". Each time I boot the system, the two desktops find the "home network" and the homegroup that they are joined to just fine. I have set up a "home network" and the two slightly newer desktop machines (Dell 420 and Dell 430) are just talking beautifully to one another and internet access is fine. I have high speed Comcast internet access through a cable modem and a wired 8 port Linksys router. I have three computers in my home with a wired network that I installed some 15 years ago when I built the house. I am having no problems with video, audio or anything.EXCEPT the built in "wired" network adapter.which is described by the system as a Broadcom 440x 10/100 integrated controller.

So, I decided to upgrade my laptop at the same time as I upgraded two newer desktop machines. I know that Dell doesn't include the 9400/E1705 laptop in their list of systems that are Windows 7 compatible, but I ran the Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor and it really didn't show much in the way of hardware that wasn't compatible. I would suggest you to contact the manufacture of the product and check.Well, I'm not sure what to do past this point.
